Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a proven and highly-regulated technique that has been used by oil and gas companies for over 60 years. Fracking follows the basic principle of cracking rock and propping it open to allow oil and gas to flow to the surface. The US is the global leader in fracking, accounting for half of US output across over 300,000 wells. Significant shale oil and gas reserves have been identified in Russia, China, and Argentina – and all three nations have shown a willingness to embrace the process. Fracking is one method to open up geological formations where oil exists, but is harder to access. To get the oil to start flowing through certain geological formations, it is necessary to provide it with a path through which to flow. That is where fracking comes into play, creating a network of micro-fractures through which the oil can begin to flow. At the end of the fracking process, the oil trapped in the rock formation can begin moving. To prompt production, the well must be “completed,” which is a separate phase in the drilling process whereby perforations are made along the entire link of the lateral wellbore. During the completion (fracking) phase, a mix of water, chemicals, and proppant is forced into the wellbore at super high pressure, In 2018, the oil and gas industry operating in North Dakota’s Bakken Shale burned off record amounts of natural gas, largely obtained via hydraulic fracturing (fracking). This process, known as flaring, costs the industry money — it literally burns one of Hydraulic fracturing is an oil and natural gas production technique that involves the injection of millions of gallons of water, plus chemicals and sand, underground at very high pressure in order to create fractures in the underlying geology to allow natural gas to escape. It also is called hydrofracturing,
