In short, a daily moving average is a line added to any stock chart that represents the average price of a stock over the last xx days. Traders use all sorts of moving averages. The most common is the 50-day moving average, so a rolling line that displays the average price of the past 50 days. Stock chart volume is the number of shares traded during a given time period. Usually plotted as a histogram under a chart, volume represents the interest level in a stock. If a stock is trading on low volume, then there is not much interest in the stock. The red line cutting through the volume bars is also a 50-day moving average, but this one is an indication of the average number of shares traded over the last 50 trading sessions. When viewing a daily chart, this line represents a 50-day moving average volume level. Average daily trading volume is typically calculated over 20 or 30 days. Calculate average daily trading volume by adding up trading volume over the last X number of days. Then, divide the total by X. For example, sum the last 20 days of trading volume and divide by 20 to get the 20-day ADTV.
