Every October since 2009, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released comprehensive data on Medicare Advantage (MA) health plan performance through its Star Ratings program. The program's goals are to incentivize health insurers to improve their MA plans and encourage consumers to enroll in high-quality plans. CMS released its 2020 ratings for Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, with various Kaiser Permanente plans getting the highest ratings. The CMS began its star-rating system for Medicare's private insurance coverage about a decade ago as a way to encourage insurance companies to provide high quality care to Medicare beneficiaries.
