At tastytrade, we use futures to scalp, hedge and give us an overall sense of market activity. On the institutional side, large corporations use futures to hedge themselves against rising or falling prices in products they use often. For example, airline companies may purchase oil futures to lock in a price in which they purchase their fuel. A tick value is the minimum amount that a futures contract can fluctuate. Tick values vary depending on the product traded. For example in WTI Crude (/CL) it is $0.01 which is = to $10.00. As the market moves, it can move in multiple ticks between trades, but the smallest movement the contract in the example above could make is to 52.00 to 52.01 Depending on the expiration cycle, some futures options expire to cash, while others expire to the underlying futures contract. Futures options will expire into cash when the options and futures expire in the same month. If the options and the future expire in different months, the options settle to the future. Cotton is typically planted in April/May and the first few weeks of it’s growth, are critical in ensuring a healthy crop. The highest prices paid for cotton futures occur between March-July (which is during the cotton’s most vulnerable time as a plant). The lowest prices typically occur between September and November. CME will launch Bitcoin Futures on Sunday December 17th at 5pm CT. Today we discuss and dig into the launch and the contract specs for the new /BTC contract. Bitcoin futures will have a high margin requirement due to the nature of how volatile it is as a product.
